Child Struggling to Understand Math? Try These 5 Methods at Home

11 Apr 2026 Artikel

“I’ve explained it just now, why don’t you understand yet?”

Ever let slip something like this while teaching your child Math? You’re exhausted, and your child is stuck. Try stopping for a moment and see which part they still don’t get.

Here are five methods you can try at home.

1. Find where your child got stuck

Take one question your child got wrong. Ask, “Can you tell me how you calculated this earlier?”

If they are still confused with multiplication, go over that part first before moving on to fractions. No need to finish one chapter in a single night.

2. Use objects right in front of you

Want to explain division? Take 12 pencils and ask your child to distribute them equally among three people.

After that, write 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Let your child see what the calculation means.

3. Start small

Try starting with three questions or 10 minutes. If your child still feels comfortable, continue a little more.

When they get tired and start guessing answers, take a break. You can try again tomorrow.

4. When wrong, check together

Instead of immediately giving the answer, try saying, “This early step is correct. Let’s look at this next part.”

Praise the effort you notice, for example when your child re-calculates without being told. Avoid comparing them with their siblings or friends.

5. Try another way of explaining

If you’ve repeated the same thing but your child is still confused, try drawing or looking at examples from the school textbook together.

Still stuck? Ask the teacher which part your child needs to revisit. From there, it’s easier to choose exercises or decide if they need extra help.

Tonight, pick just one question. Sit next to your child and ask them to show you how they do it. Start from there.
