Child Always Delaying Studies? Try These 5 Ways

“Just a moment.”

That’s the same answer our child gives every time we tell them to open their books. After calling them repeatedly, we start raising our voices.

Before immediately saying they’re lazy, try asking what makes it hard for them to start. Tired? Don’t understand the questions? Or does looking at a pile of work already feel overwhelming?

1. Ask first, listen until they’re done

Try asking, “Is there any difficult schoolwork today?” While they’re talking, give them space before we jump in with advice.

If they say they don’t understand, ask them to show that part. It’s easier to help when we know what’s stuck.

2. Make the first task smaller

“Finish everything before bed” might feel like too much. Try starting with, “Let’s do these two questions first.”

After it’s done, look together at what’s left and when to continue. Have a clear start and stopping point.

3. Give simple choices

“Do you want to start with Malay or Math?”

The work still needs to be done, but the child can choose which first. If they don’t know what to pick, suggest one they feel they can do on their own.

4. Accompany them when they need to start

Sit beside them for a moment and read the instructions together. Then give them a chance to try on their own, while we stay nearby in case they need help.

When you see effort, say it clearly: “Earlier it was hard to start, but you’ve finished two questions.” No need to wait for high marks to praise.

5. Find a time when the child still has energy

If they just got home from school and haven’t eaten or rested, give them time first. Discuss a suitable start time, for example after bathing and having an afternoon snack.

Try following that time for a few days. If it always ends with the child being too tired, adjust together.

If the child still often avoids studying even after trying, talk to the teacher. Ask how they do their work in class and which parts need help.

For today, try sitting beside them and asking, “Which part is the hardest to start?” Listen to their answer first.
